Enter your budget, planned and actual % complete and the cost so far. Get PV, EV, CV, SV, CPI, SPI, EAC, ETC, VAC and TCPI, each with a plain explanation.
The total approved budget for the work, as a plain number in any currency (use a dot for decimals).
How much of the work should be done by the status date.
How much of the work is really done.
What the work done so far has cost.
PV Planned value
100,000.00
The budget for the work that should be done by now (BAC × planned %).
EV Earned value
90,000.00
The budget for the work actually done (BAC × actual %).
AC Actual cost
95,000.00
What the work done so far has actually cost.
CV Cost variance
-5,000.00
Over budget so farEV - AC. Below 0 means the work done cost more than its budget.
SV Schedule variance
-10,000.00
Behind scheduleEV - PV. Below 0 means less work is done than planned.
CPI Cost performance index
0.947
Over budgetEV ÷ AC. Value earned per unit spent; below 1 means over budget.
SPI Schedule performance index
0.900
Behind scheduleEV ÷ PV. Work done against work planned; below 1 means behind schedule.
EAC Estimate at completion
263,888.89
BAC ÷ CPI. The forecast total cost if spending efficiency stays as it is.
ETC Estimate to complete
168,888.89
EAC - AC. The forecast cost of the remaining work.
VAC Variance at completion
-13,888.89
Forecast over budgetBAC - EAC. Below 0 means the project is forecast to finish over budget.
TCPI To-complete performance index
1.032
Needs better cost efficiency(BAC - EV) ÷ (BAC - AC). The cost efficiency the remaining work needs to finish on budget.
Amounts are in the currency you entered, rounded to 2 decimals; indices are rounded to 3.
Want these numbers without the spreadsheet?
Plan it in Milesto, freeEarned value management (EVM) compares three numbers at a status date: the planned value of the work that should be done by now, the earned value of the work that is actually done (valued at its budget), and the actual cost of that work. Together they show whether a project is over or under budget, ahead of or behind schedule, and where it is heading.
| Metric | Formula | Shown when |
|---|---|---|
| PV | BAC × planned % | Always |
| EV | BAC × actual % | Always |
| CV | EV - AC | Always |
| SV | EV - PV | Always |
| CPI | EV ÷ AC | AC is above 0 |
| SPI | EV ÷ PV | PV is above 0 |
| EAC | BAC ÷ CPI | AC and EV are above 0 |
| ETC | EAC - AC | AC and EV are above 0 |
| VAC | BAC - EAC | AC and EV are above 0 |
| TCPI | (BAC - EV) ÷ (BAC - AC) | AC is below BAC |
These are the same definitions Milesto uses for real projects, including when a metric is left out rather than shown as a misleading number. Money is rounded to 2 decimals and the indices to 3.
Budget at completion is the total approved budget. Planned % complete is how far along the schedule says the work should be on the status date. Actual % complete is how much of the work is really finished, judged by measurable progress rather than time or money spent. Actual cost is what has been spent on that work to date.
Working these numbers out by hand every week takes time. Once your deliverables have budgets and you save a baseline, Milesto calculates them from the work marked done and the costs recorded. Earned value is included on the Free plan.
Milesto works out PV, EV, CPI, SPI and the forecasts from your saved baseline, completed work and recorded costs. Earned value is on the Free plan, no credit card needed.
